Varsity Braves competed in a field of 10 teams and finished the day 4 –1.
Varsity head coach Claudel Ruffin praised his team after the strong showing in Saline and for the squad's win over Woodhaven.
There were a number of grapplers who performed well at the Saline tournament, including Greg Eggbert (119 pounds) who went undefeated for the day posting a 5-0 record. Other highlights included Chris Prevost (135-140 pounds) who went 4-1, Alonzo Richardson (152 pounds) who went 4-1, Ben Hand (189 pounds) went 4-1 and Malcom Bibbins (heavyweight) went 4-1.
In addition, Patrick Hobbs (112 pounds) went 3-2 on the day; Tim Estorak (125 pounds) went 3-2, Chris Harris (135-140 pounds) went 4-1 and Brian Peplinski (145 pounds) went 3-2.
Ruffin said his team his heading in the right direction, as long as everyone stays healthy.
"That will definitely be the key. When we have everybody at the tournaments, we do fairly well," Ruffin said. "If we have everyone healthy, I think we'll do fine. We're looking forward to the conference tournament this weekend."
The Mega Red Conference tournament will feature stalwart opponents Trenton, Dearborn Heights Annapolis, Lincoln Park, Woodhaven, Redford Union and Dearborn. Those teams will face Ypsilanti wrestlers who are starting to catch steam.
"These guys are starting to peak, starting to wrestle a lot better," Ruffin said. "That's the motto right there: Better to peak late rather than early.
"(We) don't want to be wrestling at their best early. We're looking forward to all these different events coming up."
