Steve Brooks, the Ypsilanti varsity basketball coach, is very familiar with Mega Red rivals Belleville and Romulus.

But Brooks didn't realize, until last week, that Taylor Truman falls into that category as well.
Ypsilanti varsity ballers and Brooks received their wake-up call Jan. 30 after they suffered a 60-43 road loss
Brooks said the 43 points total is a reflection of how poorly his team played, a performance in which he said his team "laid an egg."
"I don't want to say they were still living in (the Jan. 26) Belleville win, but we were kind of sluggish," Brooks said.
He said when an opponent, such as Truman, scores 60, his players usually will still find a way to pull it out.
Senior guard L.J. Frazier scored 15, while Marvon Sanders and Torren Burns each chipped in 13 in the loss.
Three days later, Ypsilanti awoke and defeated Romulus in a 67-61 nail-biter. Brooks said he was really proud of the way the athletes picked it up by controlling the game.
Ypsilanti led by six at the half, then by 12 in the second half. The home-court Eagles cut the deficit down to two, but Brooks said that his team still was in command.
Frazier scored 23 in the win over Romulus, Burns chipped in 11 points and five assists and Jordan Frazier and Sanders scored 12 each.
Ypsilanti, 8-5 overall and 4-1 Mega Red, now stands alone atop its division with three teams below that each hold two division losses.
"It'll probably come down to that last game," Brooks said referring to the season finale against Romulus.
"There's so much parity."
Brooks said he's satisfied with the way his team is playing, particularly Frazier.
"L.J.'s having a great senior season," Brooks said. "He's really playing great."
