Two Van Buren Township residents facing charges of rape and kidnapping have had their cases split and will be prosecuted separately, said Becky Camargo, Wayne County prosecuting attorney.

Brian Carlos Westbrook II, 18, chose to waive a Jan. 31 preliminary exam. His next court date is set for Wednesday.
David Allen Patillo, 17, was referred for a competency exam that will determine if the boy is able to stand trial. Prosecutors in the case should receive a report in about six weeks, Camargo said.
Both suspects were arraigned Jan. 23 on numerous counts of criminal sexual misconduct, armed robbery, home invasion, kidnapping and larceny in connection with an alleged Jan. 17 incident.
The suspects are accused of raping a 20-year-old Eastern Michigan University student in a Laundromat and then forcing a 25-year-old Van Buren Township woman from her car at gunpoint and raping her in her apartment.
Patillo and Westbrook are lodged in Wayne County Jail without bond.
The suspects were arrested just days after the alleged rapes. A joint investigation team comprised of detectives from Van Buren and Ypsilanti township departments, viewed surveillance video from the Ypsilanti Laundromat. Investigators identified one of the suspects before he pulled a bandana down over his face.
Van Buren detectives were familiar with the suspects because of prior incidents.
"We had no idea about the Ypsilanti rape until we looked at the reports and saw that the two incidents were similar," said Van Buren Township Police Captain Greg Laurain.
"We got with Ypsilanti P.D., and they had a lot of DNA evidence. They were trying to obtain information from that."
Van Buren police extracted confessions from both of the suspects, after they were taken into custody.
Patillo and Westbrook also face two unrelated robberies from November 2006. Captain Laurain said they had evidence linking the suspects to the robberies of two pizza delivery employees; incidents that happened in Van Buren Township.
