Sanders keys victory

By Dave Merchant, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: February 7, 2008

In a high school basketball season, playing just one game in a week can be a good thing. Especially when the team wins that game.

This was the case on Thursday night when the Ypsilanti Phoenix dropped in on the River Rouge Panthers and took home a 65-40 victory in a Mega crossover game.

"It was a five-point game at the half (34-29)," Ypsilanti Coach Steve Brooks said. "I challenged the kids in the locker room to play a better second half. I didn't want us to have a debacle like we did in the Romulus game."

Brooks' team outscored the Panthers 19-4 in the third quarter and turned up the heat on River Rouge for the rest of the game.

"We did an excellent job on defense and Marvon Sanders really picked it up," Brooks said. "Connor (Heine) really played good as well."

Sanders was the leading scorer with 18 points. Torren Burns lit it up with 16 points and Donald Spencer had four steals in the third quarter.

Brian Walker had eight points and sophomore guard Brandon Bass scored five points in his first varsity game.

Ypsilanti High improves to 7-7 overall and stays 5-2 in the Mega Red. With a busy league week they play at Taylor Truman tomorrow and last Tuesday they hosted Dearborn Heights Robichaud.
