Police Beat

False report still nets arrests

Ypsilanti police were called to the vicinity of Pearl and Ballard streets 11 p.m. last Friday at 11 after a Milan man reported he had been assaulted.

The victim told officers he had been in the area of West Michigan Avenue and Washington Street earlier in the evening when he had been approached by four men. The victim said he offered to buy $20 worth of marijuana from one of the men, but only had a $50 bill. He said one of the men then pulled a gun and took $190 in cash from the victim.

The victim stated he had continued to roam around town, looking for marijuana to buy, and came upon the same four men at the intersection of Ballard and Pearl streets. The victim told the four he didn't have a gun to fight them with, but would fight them "one-on-one."

The victim further stated two of the men then assaulted him, while the other two watched. Officers observed the victim was intoxicated and the victim stated that he was violating his probation by being intoxicated.

Other officers found the four suspects nearby while the victim was being interviewed. Two of the suspects were caught immediately, while two ran and were caught, after a chase, in the 600 block of Pearl Street. No drugs of any kind and no weapons were found on the suspects.

After the victim positively identified the suspects, he changed his story and said only one of the suspects had met with him the first time and that suspect had given him rocks of "fake crack" as change for his $50 bill, which he had thrown away.

He also said when he had seen the one suspect with the other three, he had gotten into an altercation with the one man, but the other three had not been involved in either the alleged drug deal or the fight.

Two of the suspects who were caught in this incident were wanted on felony warrants for criminal sexual conduct and were transported to the Washtenaw County Jail. The other two were released without charge. Police are looking to charge the alleged victim with making a false report.

Good Samaritan threatened

At 2 a.m. last Saturday, Ypsilanti police responded to a report of a felonious assault.

A man said he had been driving west bound on East Cross Street at the Cross Street Bridge when he observed a man assaulting a woman on the bridge. The victim said he stopped his car, got out and approached the couple.

The victim said the suspect pulled out a gun and threatened him. The victim then got back in his car, drove a short distance away and called police.

When officers arrived, the couple was gone. The suspect is described as a six-foot tall man wearing a gray coat, black hat and blue pants.

Armed Robbery

At 10:40 a.m. Monday, Ypsilanti police received a call of an armed robbery in the 1400 block of Gregory Street.

The 20-year-old woman said she had been approached by an unknown man, who threatened her with a small silver knife and demanded money and her wallet.

When the victim refused to give up her property, the man slashed at her with the knife. Although the victim was unhurt, her coat and shirt were cut. The suspect fled when the woman screamed.

The Ypsilanti police tracking dog was brought to the scene, but was unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a six-foot tall man with a medium build wearing a puffy coat with a red and yellow design, black skull cap and black Timberland boots.

Anyone with information should contact Ypsilanti police at 483-9510.
