Students will receive college credits from the program. ECA Director David Dugger said that students can earn up to 60 college credits under the new program. and it doesn't cost a thing. Students, however, are responsible for their own transportation.
The program is held at Eastern Michigan University and is open to ninth and tenth-grade students who attend the following community schools: Lincoln, Milan, Whitmore Lake and Ypsilanti.
Dugger said students who want to apply for the fall 2008 must currently be enrolled in the ninth or tenth-grade.
The program is considered to be a middle college. Dugger said there was only two middle colleges for a long time which included Mott Middle College and Washtenaw Technical Middle College. Dugger use to work at Washtenaw Technical Middle College as the principal and associate dean.
The program is designed to help students prepare for fields such as health, medicine, mathematics, science, technology and business. After completing the program students can continue their studies in higher education schools.
The program really allows students to accelerate in school and students, he said.
The first Early College Alliance at EMU started last week. Dugger said it opened with 46 students and in the fall they will be looking for a cohort of 130 students.
"At first students will be grouped together for a traditional school day, taking high school classes in math, science, social studies and English," Dugger said in a press release. "Then they will transition into a blended school and eventually become full-time college students, taking university courses throughout campus."
The program teaches a curriculum in the first five weeks called College Readiness and Life Management Skills that teaches students how to become successful in post secondary education, he said.
The ECA program has a host of partners. The deadline to submit applications for students is March. 25.
