Railsplitters fall short against Dexter

Coach to emphasize strong defense

By Bruce Mason, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: February 1, 2007

A lack of defense, a nasty gash and failure to utilize strengths were all witnessed by Lincoln basketball coach Mike Foley on Jan. 26.

As a result, the Railsplitters fell short in a 61-48 loss to Dexter.

Aaron Hawkins scored 12 and Brian Cogdell chipped in 11 in the losing effort.

"We definitely didn't establish ourselves on the defensive end," Foley said, whose team dropped to 2-7 after the loss.

"We didn't play to our strengths."

It didn't help when Ryan Walton left the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter with a gash sustained right above his eye. Foley believes Walton was attempting to get a loose ball and was cut from a finger nail. Walton was rushed to the hospital and received nine stitches, but Foley said he would be ready to play in the coming week.

In the loss to Dexter, Foley found a bright spot in freshman Andrew Dillon.

The 6-foot, 2-inch forward was given substantial minutes after being brought up from junior varsity and made the most of his time by grabbing four rebounds and chipping in five points. Dillon was the quarterback on the varsity football team this past season, and is "extremely talented," according to Foley.

"He'll be able to give us a boost this year," Foley said. "He'll provide depth for us."

Foley said he will be stressing defense in practice prior to the next game, Lincoln faced off on Tuesday in a tilt against Chelsea. The Bulldogs were 10-0 entering the game and Foley acknowledged that his team had a tough task in front of them. But he also informed his team in practice that giving their opponent its first loss was not out of question.

"You don't have to be a better team…you have to be a better team on that day," Foley said.

"We'll be able to compete if we utilize our strengths."
