Varsity ballers knocked off two Mega Red opponents last week as strong shooting and even stronger defense lifted the Purple and Gold against Dearborn Heights Robichaud and Belleville High School.
"Once again, it's a testament to our non-conference schedule, we're playing really good teams," Ypsilanti basketball coach Steve Brooks said. "They exposed some things we weren't good at."
On Jan. 23, Ypsilanti defeated Robichaud, 84-68.
"The whole team had a great game," Brooks said.
L.J. Frazier scored 29, while Torren Burns chipped in 22 points and eight assists. Center Terry Lopez recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Marvon Sanders had eight steals.
On Friday, Ypsilanti defeated Belleville 74-60 in a charged contest between the cross-town rivals.
Lopez had 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Sanders chipped in 16 points and Frazier continued his team-leading play with 12 points and five assists. Jordan Fraser had 11 points.
Brooks said the game plan against Belleville was to make sure they could play great defense against a good shooting team.
"It was a really good team effort," Brooks said. "(The players) were in tune to getting the basket after we forced the turnover.
"It seems to be a different player stepping up every time. (The players) are a little more in tune to what we want to do in terms of game plans."
Previous teams under Brooks at Ypsilanti may have been more talented, but he says this current team has great chemistry.
Brooks has coached at Ypsilanti for three seasons, reaching the regional championship each year. So, can this team with great chemistry go further than teams from the past?
"This team is kind of surprising me," Brooks said, adding that Ypsilanti is in a different district this year.
"It'll be interesting. It all depends on who comes to play, who's ready to play," Brooks said.
