Students on local TV: Ypsilanti High School seniors Jasen Freeman and Chasity Keough along with YHS drama teacher Michele Peet, taped a segment for "Access Soapbox" CTN, Channel 17 on Comcast Cable. The students talked about their upcoming participation in the NAAPID at NIGHT Student Showcase that will take place 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Pioneer High School.

Black History events set: The month long activities organized by the Ypsilanti High School Student Council include: Movie Night, 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 4, in the high school auditorium; NAAPID Day assembly, select juniors and seniors will perform during the school day; Poetry Slam, 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 in the high school auditorium; a "Taste of Culture" 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 in the high school cafeteria, families are invited to bring a dish that represents their culture; Gospel Night, 7 p.m. Feb. 29 in the high school auditorium.

Winter open houses set: YPS secondary schools will host winter open houses to showcase the opportunities available to students in grades 6 through 12.
The middle school open house is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at West Middle School, 105 N. Mansfield. The Ypsilanti High School open house is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7. Both open houses will feature a curriculum overview, presented by Executive Director of Educational services, Richard Weigel, performances by the Ypsilanti High School Chamber Singers and Jazz Band, introduction of the school principals; Janice Sturdivant (East Middle), Monica Merritt (West Middle) and Jon Brown (YHS), tours and carry-away information pieces.

Polar Plunge event set: The annul Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics is set for noon Feb. 16 in Ann Arbor's Gallup Park.
The Ypsilanti High School Community Based Education program is participating with the fund-raiser and is recruiting individuals to "freeze their fur" for the cause.
Donations begin at $50 and the various sponsor levels gifts range from a Polar Plunge t-shirt to an official Polar Plunge robe.
Following the dunk in the Huron River, there will be award presentations and lunch. Deadline to register is Feb. 10.
