Salvation Army seeks help

PUBLISHED: January 31, 2008

The holiday season may be over, but Washtenaw County residents can still help those in need by donating to The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County's hristmas Campaign, which runs through Jan. 31.

TSA-WC is three percent short of its Christmas Campaign goal of $850,000.

"We are so grateful to all Washtenaw County residents who have donated to the Red Kettles and to our Mail Appeal so far, but the need in our community has increased tremendously over the last year," said Capt. Ralph Labbee, Washtenaw County coordinator.

"Although more than 1,700 individuals were helped during the holiday season because of our community's generosity, many more can be helped throughout the year if we meet our overall goal."

More than 1,400 volunteers rang bells at Red Kettle stands this season and hundreds more assisted with the collection, sorting and distribution of food, toys and clothing. Volunteer Coordinator Janice Nelson said, "it was heartening to see so many individuals give of their time and talent to help others."

Those interested in donating can stop by the Ann Arbor Corps located at 100 Arbana St. or call 734-668-8358 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to make a credit card donation.

The Salvation Army is a Christian, charitable organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. Operating in Washtenaw County for more than 100 years, the non-profit addresses the physical and spiritual needs of the area through various programs and service centers located in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

Essential services provided by TSA of Washtenaw County include a food pantry, soup kitchen, clothing, a family shelter, transitional housing and counseling for veterans, character building for youth, camp programs, emergency and disaster relief, utility assistance and eviction prevention.
