In other business, board members honored longtime educator and former superintendent Ralph Grimes at its meeting last week.
Grimes' widow, Gale, and daughter, Robyn, were presented with a resolution recognizing Grimes' "accomplishments and steadfast leadership" in 30 years of service to the district.
Superintendent James Hawkins, with whom Grimes worked closely as an assistant superintendent in the 1980s, spoke highly of the man who had taken over from him in 1990. Hawkins reminisced about his long hours, his dedication to the students and being "the man with the golden throat."
"Ralph Grimes was a true gentleman and a great educator," Hawkins said in summing up.
The board acknowledged the donation of $1000 to West Middle School's Athletic Department from Royce and Natalie Savvides, owners of the Tower Inn.
