After starting out the season with a 10-1 record, the Braves went 0-5 in a tournament this past Saturday.
"(We had) a couple of guys out of our lineup, (and that) kind of hurt us," said Ypsilanti wrestling coach Claudell Ruffin.
Steven Hitchcock (171), Patrick Hobbs (112) and Chris Prevost (130) are among the injured wrestlers. And without them, the Braves had to give up 18 points in their respective weight classes.
The Braves now hold a 10-6 record, and Ruffin said he has been pleased with the season thus far.
"Once we get everyone back healthy, we'll be okay for the end of the season," he said.
One of those wrestlers who is healthy, and having a good year, is junior Greg Egbert (119 lbs.). Egbert has just two losses this year and went to states last season. He has already matched up against two state qualifiers, and one of his two losses came in a 9-8 battle with a kid from Hartland, who happens to be the No. 1 wrestler in the state for his class.
Ruffin said senior Chris Harris (135 lbs.) has only two losses as well, while seniors Ben Hand (189 lbs) and Alonzo Richardson (162 lbs.) have been putting up good performances on the mats.
The Braves will compete among 14 teams at the Woodhaven Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20. Among those teams competing will be Belleville, which took first place last year, and Lincoln Park.
"It could go either way," Ruffin said. "It should be pretty close, though."
