GRACE H. CORNISH

Grace H. Cornish, 89, of Ypsilanti, died Jan. 10, 2007. She was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Middletown, Ohio, the daughter of Elsor and Mary (Henderson) Heater. On June 20, 1943, she married Herbert H. Cornish in Toledo, Ohio.
Mrs. Cornish earned a bachelor's degree in teaching from Bowling Green State University. She taught three years until she was married. She served as director of religious education for many years at the First Presbyterian Church, and was president of the P.E.O. Michigan chapter in 1985.
Over the years, she volunteered and was an active participant at her church, the Ypsilanti Historical Society, the Ladies Literary Club, the Girl Scouts, P.E.O., the Presbyterian Women's Organization and the Fan Association of North America.
Mrs. Cornish was dedicated to her family and grandchildren. Because of her love and hospitality, her home was a place of comfort, housing, picnics and parties for many people over the years. Many included her husband's colleagues and students, local organizations, fellow church members, as well as boarders, friends and family.
Mrs. Cornish was preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Martha Riseley.
She is survived by her children, Robert E. (Linda) Cornish, William J. (Barbara) Cornish, Carolyn C. (John) Weins and Barbara G. (Michael) Timm; 11 grandchildren, Glenn (Jennifer), Anthony (Sophia), Nicholas and Elizabeth Cornish, Kristina, Stephen and Kelsey Weins, and Marie, John, Breanne and Mark Timm; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Liam Cornish; a sister, Helen Knopp; a brother, William (Mary Ellen) Heater; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be an opportunity to greet the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday with luncheon following at the church, 300 N. Washington St. The Rev. Keith Geiselman will officiate.
