Ypsilanti police were called to the 800 block of West Michigan Avenue by a resident who said a man was banging on the door saying he had been shot.
Upon arriving, officers found a man with a gunshot wound that had entered into the back of his right leg. The victim said he had been shot by an unknown man passing him on the street in the vicinity of Brandy's Party Store. He could not give a description of the suspect.
Investigating officers soon realized the victim's statement did not match evidence found at the scene.
Another caller to the department said he had heard multiple gunshots in the area of Summit Street and West Michigan Avenue. The victim refused to cooperate further.
Foot chase results in arrest
Ypsilanti Officer Richard Houk was in the vicinity of West Michigan Avenue and Summit Street 12:12 a.m. last Friday when he observed a vehicle with two passengers in the parking lot of the party store at that intersection. The passengers noticed the patrol vehicle and began some suspicious activities in the vehicle.
As the suspect car moved toward Officer Houk, he signaled it to pull over. The driver stopped on West Michigan Avenue.
As Houk attempted to question the occupants, one of them ran, with Houk in pursuit. The chase led to a high picket fence, where the suspect, as he attempted to get over it without being caught, kicked Houk in the head.
Houk followed the suspect over the fence and attempted to arrest him. The suspect fought and pulled away, fleeing southbound and going behind the International Bioresources Plasma Center on West Michigan Avenue, where he fell down the hill but continued in the direction of Hill Street.
At Hill, Sgt. Deric Gress and Officer Mark VanTuyl were waiting and arrested the suspect on a charge of fleeing and eluding. He was found to be wanted on a traffic warrant, as well.
Traffic stop leads to chase
Ypsilanti police Officer Michael Rini was on patrol 10:20 a.m. last Saturday when he observed a red Chrysler Pacifica heading north on First Street run a stop sign at Harriet Street.
Rini signaled the car to pull over and it pulled into the Harriet Street parking lot of Perry Child Development Center. But, as Rini exited his patrol vehicle, the suspect car sped away at a high rate of speed.
The chase proceeded east on Harriet to South Hamilton Street, where the suspect went south to the I-94 westbound entrance. From there, the chase led to the Michigan Avenue exit, where the suspect car turned east, then north onto Hewitt Road and West onto Ellsworth Road.
The driver then pulled into the parking lot of the Wal-Mart store, where she was arrested for fleeing and eluding a police officer. She was also found to have been driving on a suspended license.
