Body found at scrap yard

By Kathleen Conat, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: January 10, 2008

A body found Monday morning at the A-1 Auto Salvage and Scrap Yard in Ypsilanti Township, was identified Tuesday as that of D'Mario Campbell, 23, a Taylor man who had been missing since Thanksgiving.

The identification was established using fingerprint analysis. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday to establish the cause of death. Results of the autopsy were unknown as of press time.

Cmdr. Dave Egeler with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said the body was found by a worker in the yard, who called 911 at about 9:30 a.m. The victim was found inside a fence line located in a remote portion of the property. There were no visible signs of trauma to the body.

Campbell was reported missing by his family on Nov. 24. He was last seen attending a party in the 600 block of Calder Street in Ypsilanti Township's West Willow neighborhood.

Campbell had called family members using his cell phone late on Nov. 22 and again in the early hours of Nov. 23. Both times he said he was being "chased" by unknown suspects, according to Egeler.

Campbell asked his family to pick him up in the Sugarbrook neighborhood, just south of Ecorse Road, but it was not clear if he ever made it that far.

Deputies had located Campbell's vehicle late on Thanksgiving night on the outskirts of West Willow. At the time, Egeler said it had been involved in a crash serious enough to cause injury. Campbell's coat was found inside, but there were no signs of foul play.

The following day, Nov. 25, family members found Campbell's shoes and cell phone, along with a blood stain, near a fence close to where the vehicle was found. At that time, deputies and K-9 units searched the area, but found no evidence of Campbell.

During the following days, deputies continued to search, using tracking dogs, horse-mounted patrols and going by foot. A helicopter from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department also surveyed the area. The searches never found a trace of the missing man.
