In a special meeting held last Wednesday, Ypsilanti Township officials adopted a resolution approving the 2007 budget. Board members had to approve the budget before the start of the new year.

The newly adopted budget covers all costs and revenues for the township in the coming year. Fire and police account for the largest portion of general fund spending, 35 percent, while general operating costs take up the second largest piece at 30 percent.
The township receives 38 percent of its revenue stream from state shared revenue, 14 percent from property taxes and small percentages from parks and recreation and from the 14-B District Court. A large portion of revenue, 32 percent, comes from miscellaneous sources marked as "Other.'"
Because of the declining Michigan economy, board members approved a $103,030 budget cut to operating expenses at Green Oaks Golf Course. Personnel expense in FY 2006 for the golf course was $438,380 and that has been reduced to $392,225 while non-personnel expenses in FY 2006 were $377,700 and that has been reduced to $320,825. The course's total budget for 2007 was set at $713,050 down from $816,080 from last year.
The proposal to cut the golf course budget was narrowly passed with a 4-3 vote.
While expenditure for the golf course were slashed, board members approved a 7 percent increase to law enforcement services. The Ypsi Township police services department is staffed by one, full-time administrator and encompasses the administration of the Law Enforcement Fund. The Public Safety Director is Mike Radzik.
Some of the administrator's primary duties include;
n Administrative supervision and oversight of sheriff services.
n Contractual police services.
n Contractual court work program services and operating supplies.
n Utility and maintenance costs of two police facilities.
The overall increase for 2007 reflects the projected costs for contracting deputies through Washtenaw County. Board members approved a 16 percent increase to police contracts – for 44 deputies – because of a nearly $700,000 cost increase from the previous year.
Police services is funded exclusively through the Law Enforcement Fund, according to the budget, which is a voter-approved 3.5 millage.
