The holidays have not been very festive for the Ypsilanti varsity Phoenix.

On Thursday night the locals fell to Flint Powers 61-49.
Powers led 12-10 after the first quarter. Ypsilanti fought back lo lead 25-24 at the half.
In the third quarter Powers made a move and went up 36-33. Flint Powers outscored the locals 25-14 in the final eight minutes of play.
Phoenix Coach Steve Brooks said it was a tough game but he felt was winnable by his team.
"It was only a two-point game with three minutes to go," Brooks commented. "Flint got a whole lot of lay ups on us and I think we had a lot of fatigue inside."
Brooks said that one of the key factors in the loss was the fact that his team didn't have the execution down the stretch.
"Right now we have to get some other guys to step up," he added. "I think we are asking our starting guards to do too much. We need to have our roles better defined and players to know what is expected of them."
For him this was a good test for that and he felt his players should have been ready for this game. It was played at Oakland University.
"I like games like this because they are against tough competition and almost like the playoffs," he said.
Ypsilanti hit five triples in the game. Marvon Sanders had three triples to go with his 13 points and Torren Burns hit two triples and finished with 12 points.
On Dec. 22 the Phoenix fell to Midland 54-50.
"I thought they were a tougher team than Flint-Powers," he said. "They ran the press a lot and had some very good guards."
Burns led the Phoenix in scoring with 11 points and Brandon Morris had nine points.
"We had three or four guys with five points including Marvon (who got in foul trouble early)," he said. "He hasn't really played basketball with us (because of football obligations) and I think he just has to get his timing down, again."
Brooks says that he is hoping to get Terry Lopez back soon so he can grab some rebounds. He also wants the other players to step up and develop their roles on the court.
The Phoenix fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mega Red. Last Saturday they played a very tough Detroit Cody team at Romulus and lost 67-51.
They will follow that game up with a battle at home against Muskegon Heights.
One thing he added was that his team is maybe a game or two behind the rest of the teams they play and that could have an effect on how they play.
"I like to play a tough non-league schedule," he said. "These type of games get us ready for post season play."
