Ypsilanti Police were called to the 200 block of North Summit Street on Dec. 26 in response to an assault.
The victim said he had been interested in a young woman who lived in that area and had called her. She told him to come over. But, when he arrived, the woman's boyfriend and his friends met the victim outside the building and attacked him with pipes and a fire extinguisher.
The officers attempted to gain entrance to the apartment building and were allowed entrance by another resident. Upon approaching the door of the suspect's apartment, they overheard the suspects talking about the assault, saying the victim "got what he deserved."
The officers asked to be admitted into the apartment and found the suspects there. Three people were arrested for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. The victim was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.
Narcotics arrest
Officers from the Ypsilanti police's Neighborhood Policing Team made a traffic stop last Thursday. The traffic violation happened at the intersection of Miles and Young streets, but the vehicle did not stop until it was in the vicinity of Johnson and Young streets. Before it stopped, it slowed down and a woman known to officers to be a prostitute exited the car and ran off.
Officers talked with the driver, who was known to them, and his two passengers. During this, they observed an open bottle of beer in the back seat.
One of the passengers was a woman known by officers to use narcotics. She stated she did not have any drugs on her person, but admitted to having smoked a rock of crack cocaine with the other passenger earlier.
The officers asked the woman if she would agree to be searched. When she agreed, they found a glass "crack pipe" and a baggie containing crack cocaine. She was arrested.
Police warn residents about break-ins
Ypsilanti Police Lt. Mark Angott says there has been a rash of breakings and enterings in the city at a normal rate for the holiday period. This is due to many students being away from their apartments during the holiday vacation.
Police advise residents to find someone who will be home and can keep an eye on your residence during these times. Make sure all entrance points, including windows, are locked and try to give the appearance of someone still living there by having someone stop by to pick up mail, newspapers and leaflets or stopping mail and newspaper delivery.
