Sign usage

To the Editor:

I am writing to urge the city to revise its sign ordinance.

My name is Tom Bagwell I am the Libertarian candidate for City Council in the 2nd Ward.

My campaign recently placed signs on phone poles. We were contacted by the city saying that the signs were removed for violation of the ordinance.

Upon discussion with a city employee about the matter she stated that no signs are allowed on telephone poles.

I found this curious since there were other signs for yard sales and lost pets on poles all around the locations of my signs.

I also placed two yard signs on a public corner knowing that other candidate have placed signs there before.

When I asked the city employee she stated "for you its not ok..." Upon consulting the ordinance itself it is vague at best with very ambiguous language.

I am happy to comply with all applicable laws however those laws should be clear and my signs should not be targeted simply because of my political party and/or ideology.

I would advise the city to edit the ordinance and make it clearer as well as provide candidates with information upon filing.

Residents thanked for their support

To the Editor:

I would like to personally thank everyone In Augusta Township for the time they allowed us to share our dreams and goals for Augusta’s future during our campaign.

All of you were very interested, patient, kind and some even invited us into their homes.

Your time, support and trust are greatly appreciated.

Chelsea resident spent nice
evening in Ypsilanti

To the Editor:

I spent a very pleasant evening in Ypsilanti last Thursday, thanks to the Ypsilanti Greens and the Ypsilanti Brewing Company. They sponsored a very creative fundraiser for the campaign for Keith Agdanowski for Ypsilanti City Council, 3rd Ward.

We sat under a tent top listening to Bruce Liles spin a spell of Woody Guthrie’s words and music, and were mesmerized by a reading of Mark Twain’s "The War Prayer." If you haven’t read it recently, I would highly recommend looking it up! It is very timely.

I want to compliment David French on the transformation of the old mill on Forest. Fresh paint, elbow grease and flowers do wonders. And the sampling of home brewed root beer and ginger ale was a great treat. It is wonderful to see a creative re-use of a unique old building! If you haven’t seen it, check it out.

It was a nice turnout, but I know many others would have enjoyed it, had they been there. Thanks for a lovely evening!

Leave signs alone

To the Editor:

I read the comment in the week of Thursday Aug. 5 of the Ypsilanti Courier.

I agree all of the politicians should focus on the issues that concern the residence of Augusta Township; thieves running for office should be one of these issues.

I strongly disagree with ignoring and not addressing the sign stealing and vandalizing candidates signs, while doing this the vandals have trespassed on private property, some signs along with the wires were thrown in the road to be run over.

This is not mud-slinging this is fact.

This was not a child’s prank, let us not treat it as such, this was a out and out attempt to deceive the people of Augusta by trying to keep them from knowing all of the candidates that were running for offices. But it did not work.

This behavior should not be swept under the rug nor tolerated. Let the people know of these underhanded attempts to eliminate the opponents.

The candidates that were having their signs vandalized, removed all of their signs from the township before Aug. 3, to stop the nonsense.

Looking for friends in Ypsilanti

To the Editor:

I am looking for two friends (Ronnie and Nancy Fortner) that I haven’t seen in over 20 years.

They were raised in the Ypsilanti area and they may remember me by my maiden name (Starks). We met in Owenton, Ky. when they were visiting some family members.

If anyone knows how I can reach them, please contact me via email at sweetpea@win.net or by mail at: Nancy Smith, 115 W Adair St., Apartment 5, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Thank you so much in helping me try to find some very dear friends that I’ve lost contact with.

Nancy Smith
Owentown, Kentucky
