Gas leak forces A ruptured gas line sent about people to Eastern Michigan University’s Bowen Fieldhouse Monday. The residents of Eastern Highlands apartments were sent to the fieldhouse around 3:33 p.m. because of a gas leak. A crew working on the demolition of the old paper mill on the north side of Huron River Drive at LeForge, were taking part of the building down and cut the line, said Ypsilanti Firefighter Lt. Max Anthouard. The building is being taken down to build apartments. "MichCon was called right away. Normally gas would rise, but because of the rain, the gas was staying low to the ground. The wind started blowing toward the apartments; that is why they were evacuated. LeForge Road and Huron River were closed for two or three hours," he said. Anthouard said there were no injuries and residents were able to return to their apartments about three hours later. A temporary clamp was placed on the line, and utility crews worked through the night to repair the damage. |
