Week of Thursday, August 28, 2003Students heading
back By DAVE
MELCHIOR If traffic seems a little heavier or the line at the grocery a little longer this weekend, it might just be because thousands of Eastern Michigan University students will be returning to campus for the opening of the fall semester classes on Sept. 3. Ward Mullens, manager of news services for EMU, said this week that about half of EMU’s 24,500 students live in campus housing or apartments surrounding the university. Of those students, 2,675 are freshmen and between 1,650 and 1,700 are transferring from either another university or a community college, said Andrew Wright, senior assistant director of admissions. And the most significant statistic about the freshmen is more of them were top students at their high schools. Wright said about 570 of the freshmen have grade point averages of 3.5 or better. That is up 14 percent from last fall. "That says a lot about the perception of Eastern in the community and in the state," said Wright. Students are expected to move into campus housing on Saturday and Sunday, but Mullens said new students are expected to arrive on campus Saturday so that they can participate in orientation activities planned for the weekend. Move-in weekend will bring a lot more than just EMU students to the campus, Mullens said. "For every student we have show up, you can expect two or three people with them," he said. Virtually all of the orientation programs will be directed at the university’s new students, said Mullens. "We spend a lot of time getting them oriented to life at Eastern Michigan University, how to find student services, how to access student services …," said Mullens. "Our numbers are up in every category," said Mullens, "as far as the number of students." Actually, the first major activity comes even before the weekend move-in. EMU begins its football season with a home game against East Tennessee State. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rynearson Stadium. |
