Willow Run High
incident investigated

By DAVE MELCHIOR

Willow Run High School and school district officials are investigating an incident in which a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl engaged in a sexual act in a hallway of the high school.

Willow Run Superintendent John Hansen said Monday the incident occurred during the school day Friday.

He said because of the nature of the situation and the two students involved officials could not discuss details because that information could reveal the identity of the girl involved.

The girl is considered the victim in the incident, said Hansen, who said the boy had been suspended from school and the case turned over to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department and Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether and what criminal charges might be sought.

The incident occurred in a hallway while classes were in session.

Parents were notified of the incident in a letter that was sent home with students and signed by the principal, William McGill.

Hansen said school officials "most likely" would seek to expel the boy involved in the incident.

Other students discovered the two students engaged in the sexual activity, said Hansen, and reported it immediately to security personnel.

"If anybody ever wondered why we have police liaison, this is why," said Hansen.

The school’s liaison officer was at the school when the incident was reported and was immediately involved in the response to it, Hansen said.

The letter to parents assured them that the incident was an isolated one and was dealt with swiftly.

Hansen echoed that Monday, "The main message we’re trying to send is this thing happened; it was handled; it doesn’t constitute a continuing threat."

In his letter to parents, McGill said the parents of the two students have met with school administrators, the police liaison officer and other "necessary professional staff."
