chief By DAVE MELCHIOR Ypsilanti Deputy Police Chief William King is leaving at the end of May to become director of public safety at Wayne State University in Detroit. King, 51, became deputy chief in the city in November 1999. Previous to that he had been with the Michigan State Police, including two years in the mid 1990s as commander of the Ypsilanti Post. He begins his duties at Wayne State on June 10. King praised the city, the Police Department and Chief George Basar and said he decided to leave Ypsilanti because the Wayne State job is a "good opportunity." "It has been a great experience working with George," said King. Ypsilanti has always been close to my heart. I’m real excited about things that are happening in the city. There are a lot of things happening." King is familiar with Wayne State, where he did undergraduate work. The Ypsilanti and Wayne State departments are about the same size, said King. "I’m sorry to see him leave," said Basar about King’s departure. "But I’m very happy for Bill and the opportunity this presents to him." Basar said Capt. Matt Harshberger "will assume the role of second in command" when King departs. The chief said the needs of the department will be assessed before city officials decide whether to hire a new deputy chief. "This provides us with an opportunity to take our time and evaluate our structure," Basar said. "Any time something like this happens, it gives you a chance to evaluate the structure. We’ll take our time and talk with the administration and see how we go." |
