Week of Thursday, May 23, 2002Suspect arraigned An Ypsilanti Township man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of a 32-year-old Ann Arbor resident Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Gault Village Shopping Center. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department reported Tuesday that Lester Lee Roberson, 52, of Ypsilanti Township, was arraigned on open murder, felony firearms, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon charges in the shooting death of Teresa Jones, at 1:50 p.m. Sunday in the Gault Village parking lot. The Sheriff’s Department reported that Jones was shopping at Gault Village with her three children, a son and two daughters, when she went to the parking lot to put packages in her vehicle. Roberson, who was described as an ex-boyfriend of the victim, drove up, and Jones got into his vehicle, which the Sheriff’s Department said was reported stolen in Detroit. Shots were fired, said the Sheriff’s Department, and Jones fell to the pavement. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Roberson then fled, the Sheriff’s Department said. He was arrested after Deputy Mike Burrough saw Roberson driving near Prospect and Forest. Roberson was stopped and arrested without incident, the Sheriff’s Department reported. The gun investigators believe was used in the shooting has been recovered. Just before the shooting, Jones sent her son into one of the stores in Gault Village where his two sisters were shopping. She told her son she was going to talk to her ex-boyfriend, investigators said. |
