Hundreds show
their PRIDE

By DAVE MELCHIOR

PRIDE Day went extremely well this year.

So said Samantha Adkins Buescher, chair of volunteers for the event, on Monday.

"Everywhere you looked, there were people working," said Buescher. "We’re estimating we had probably 2,500 people out there cleaning."

PRIDE Day was Saturday. Volunteers spent the morning cleaning up and sprucing up the community, followed by a community picnic Saturday afternoon in Riverside Park.

Buescher said there were numerous individuals and groups who undertook cleanup projects as part of the PRIDE Day activities.

Organizers already are looking ahead to next year.

"Next year is going to be bigger and better, especially with Superior Township on board," she said. This was the first year Superior Township participated in the cleanup.

Augusta Township joined with PRIDE last year, and Augusta organizer Bill Manty reported that participation was extremely good this year.

The center of activity in Augusta was a refuse collection site at Lincoln High School.

Manty estimated that at least 500 tons of waste ranging from hazardous household chemicals to appliances to car parts was collected at the site on Saturday.

He said at least 500 people brought refuse to the site, and the amount of refuse collected this year probably was double what it was last year.

He especially praised Michcon and Gasper Recycling for their efforts, but he said there were people too numerous to name who participated in the cleanup.

He said those who participated demonstrated "they’re love for our community; they’re loyalty to our community. It’s definitely there. It really was a great day."

PRIDE organizers presented several awards Saturday:

· Mantis Garden Supply on West Michigan Avenue received an award for improvements to their location.

· New Life Baptist Church on Michigan Avenue received an award for beautification efforts.

· Suzanne and Jerry Mominee were recognized for collecting litter along community streets throughout the year.

· Clark East Tower residents were recognized for all of their efforts throughout a lifetime in the community.

Buescher praised the PRIDE committee for its efforts too.

"Our committee was absolutely wonderful," she said. "I want to give a special thanks to them and a special thanks to the organizations and individuals who contributed money."
