Suspect arraigned
in fatal shooting

An Ypsilanti Township man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of a 32-year-old Ann Arbor resident Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Gault Village Shopping Center.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department reported Tuesday that Lester Lee Roberson, 52, of Ypsilanti Township, was arraigned on open murder, felony firearms, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon charges in the shooting death of Teresa Jones, at 1:50 p.m. Sunday in the Gault Village parking lot.

Assistant police chief
leaving department

Ypsilanti Deputy Police Chief William King is leaving at the end of May to become director of public safety at Wayne State University in Detroit.

KING

King, 51, became deputy chief in the city in November 1999. Previous to that he had been with the Michigan State Police, including two years in the mid 1990s as commander of the Ypsilanti Post.

He begins his duties at Wayne State on June 10.

King praised the city, the Police Department and Chief George Basar and said he decided to leave Ypsilanti because the Wayne State job is a "good opportunity."

Heritage Foundation
honoring longtime
city preservationist

Jack Harris, one of Ypsilanti’s best-known historic preservation activists, will receive recognition from the Ypsilanti Heritage Foundation next week.

Harris will receive a special recognition award from the Ypsilanti Heritage Foundation during the organization’s annual marker banquet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, in the Ladies’ Literary Club, 218 N. Washington Ave.

Council member
challenging mayor

Ypsilanti City Councilwoman Lois Richardson, D-First Ward, will face incumbent Mayor Cheryl Farmer, an independent, in the November general election.

Initially it appeared Richardson would first have to defeat Charles Williams in the August Democratic primary before facing the mayor in the general election, but Williams’ name will not appear on the Democratic primary ballot.

PRIDE Day went extremely well this year.

So said Samantha Adkins Buescher, chair of volunteers for the event, on Monday.

"Everywhere you looked, there were people working," said Buescher. "We’re estimating we had probably 2,500 people out there cleaning."
